WEEK 4: September 12th-16th 2016

This week for Reflection Class students painted and wrote on petals the qualities that we decided make a good friend and that each of them would like to have.

The next day, students gave the petals to their classmates which they felt had these qualities to make our own friendship flowers.

Here students are looking at photos of germs seen under microscopes.

We did an experiment to watch our fake germs (pepper) scatter when a soapy hand is put into the water.

Next we had a student volunteer (Aksel) to be someone who just sneezed lots of germs onto his hand and watched how many handshakes and high fives that the germs traveled between us.

We also learn about how to organize shapes into a Carroll Diagram in Maths. Here students had some fun organizing themselves into a diagram.

We looked into our question "Why do we exercise?" by doing some exercise and then observing the changes in our bodies. We found that our hearts, lungs and muscles were working and our bodies heat up. This helps us to get stronger bodies to fight off germs and do other strenuous activities more easily. It also helps our bodies to run smoothly so we can feel good and think clearly with lots of energy.

This week we wrote our recounts of the trip to Kidzania and had the students reviewing their work carefully. We began looking at persuasive language and using the ‘OREO’ method to structure our persuasive arguments.
·         To continue to look at persuasive language and persuasion texts
Maths
We have been looking at 2D shapes, which included finding lines of symmetry, right angles and sorting 2D shapes using a Carroll diagram.
·         Begin to mark numbers on a landmarked line, compare and order numbers, using < and > signs, work systematically to find all possible inequalities, find 1 and 10 more or less using the 100-square, find 10 more and 10 less than any 2-digit number
Inquiry
In addition to our trip we have been finding out more about eating healthy, why we exercise, brushing our teeth, germs and bacteria.
·         We will begin the next phase - ‘sorting out’ and the students will analyze the data from our teacher surveys and weekly health checks
