WEEK 8: October 10th-14th 2016

  Thank you to all the parents for coming in to visit during parent teacher conferences. For those of you that were unable to join us- feel free to email or call reception anytime to set up another appointment, I am available to see you.

The students were very excited about our Charity Day Events which have been postponed to later this year. Some year twelve students came to our class to give a presentation about the Operation Smile charity we are sponsoring. The class had many great questions afterwards.

We decided that we will make jello and Pudding to sell to raise money. The students followed the instructions themselves and (apart from pouring boiling water) made the Jello cups on their own.

 This week we also learnt about measurement, how to use a ruler and the difference between centimeters and meters. We of course had a great time measuring objects in the classroom including our hands, legs and feet.

 Students made posters to promote our Jello and Pudding Stand at the Charity Event which we will keep to use for the future sale.

We have also begun to learn about time, reviewing left and right, a half turn and quarter turn. Here we were practicing with our bodies.

This week we have also had some fun lessons learning about measurement and rhyming words in poetry.

Y2 Weekly Update:
Week 8 2016

This Week

Next Week- After Holidays

English
This week, we have continued our work on poetry by looking at shape poems. These are poems that are written in the layout of what they are about. So clouds poems will be in the shape of a cloud for example. We also had our big writing assessment on our weekend news.
  • Half term holiday writing and finishing off our unit on poetry.
Math
This week we looked at position and direction, and the vocabulary used to describe position and direction. This involved a lot of partnered work to provide us with the opportunity to use the relevant language for direction and position.
  • Add and subtract 2-digit numbers;
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems using concrete and pictorial representations;
  • Add near doubles to double 15;
  • Add several small numbers spotting near doubles or pairs to 10, etc.
Inquiry
We finished off our unit on health and well being. Some of our inquiry time was used to prepare for the upcoming charity day.
  • Begin our next unit of inquiry - "How we express ourselves - the art of storytelling"
