Term 2- week 3: January 16th- 20th 2017
What a fun week we have had! In continuing our Forces Unit,
students got to create a magnetic maze, discover how to use air pressure to
move a toy car and use elastic potential energy to shoot objects across the
playground. (the record was more than 7
meters!)
To further students’ learning about nonfiction texts, each child
has taken home a nonfiction book from our classroom library to enjoy for the
weekend.
Our final project will have the students creating their own invention;
if you could please send any recyclable materials to use for their creations it
would be appreciated. (Thanks to the
parents who have already donated!)
This week we continued to learn about non-fiction texts and their features so we have been spending more time in the class library.
Time is always a tricky concept for year two students. We are learning half past= 30 minute, quarter after=15 minutes and quarter to= 45 minutes. If your child is still struggling a little, keep working on it with them, but don't worry; we will be revisiting this topic throughout the year.
After an introduction on air pressure and wind force, students were given a car, a balloon and some sticky tack to try and use this force to move the car. Everyone succeeded after time, and everyone had a lot of fun.
The highlight of the week was certainly the Great Year Y2R Elastic Force contest! Students again were given an introduction on elastic bands and the potential energy that they contain. They then were given a cup, a balloon and a cube to try and use the force to move the cube. Once they discoered how this can be done- we had a contest outside to see who could shoot their cube the farthest.

(After some student questions about elastic bands we also did research to watch a video about where elastic bands come from)

English

This week we looked at explanation texts
to do with forces and using these as a reference for answering some
questions. We also worked on writing lists and writing a glossary for a
non-fiction book.
|
·
We will begin to
create our own explanation texts.
|
Math
|
This week we looked at time and 3D
shapes. With 3D shapes, we looked at the properties of the shapes and how 3D
shapes can be constructed from 2D shapes. With time, we were looking at both
analogue and digital clocks and how to read times including “half past”
‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’.
|
·
Order 2-digit numbers
and revise the < and > signs;
·
locate 2-digit numbers
on a landmarked line and grid;
·
round 2-digit numbers
to nearest 10;
·
estimate a quantity
<100 within a range

Inquiry
|
We continued with more finding out as
there is so much to learn about forces - this included experiments with elastics,
magnets and balloons to develop our understanding of forces further. (air
pressure, potential forces and magnetic force)
|
·
We will spend some
time sorting out what we have learn as well as making plans for going further
and creating our own simple machines.

Tuesday 24th January -
KS1 sports day 8:00 - 10:00. Students will need their PE kit and house colours shirts.
